When an air-conditioning system no longer blows cold air, it may have a refrigerant or compressor problem. Testing the manifold pressure can reveal the nature of the problem. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Manifold Pressure

    • Manifold pressure indicates the pressure of the refrigerant in an air-conditioning system, usually in terms of pounds per square inch (psi).

    Gauges

    • According to Aircondition.com, a manifold pressure detector includes two gauges. The low-pressure gauge measures vacuum pressure, while the high-pressure gauge measures positive pressure.

    Hoses

    • Three hoses feed pressure data to the gauges during testing. A blue hose connects to the low-pressure service port, while a red hose connects to the high-pressure port and a yellow hose attaches to the refrigerant cylinder (when charging) or the vacuum pump (when removing moisture and air from the device).

    Static Pressure

    • Ideally, the static pressure, or the pressure in the air conditioner during shut-off, should give identical readings on both gauges.

    Other Readings

    • Short-cycling, a rapid fluctuation of the low-pressure gauge, indicates that the unit needs refrigerant. When charging the compressor, the high-pressure gauge should read 1.8 to 2.1 times the outdoor temperature.
