To make garden mix compost, combine your organic matter in a bin or pile, keep the pile moist and turn it periodically. Depending on the mix of carbon and nitrogen in you pile, and how often you turn it, you will have finished compost within two months to 1 year.
Appearance of Finished Compost

When finished, both leaf mold and garden mix compost will be brown and crumble easily. There should be no distinguishable pieces of organic matter and the smell should be pleasant and earthy.
