Job Description for an Anchorman

Save

When it comes to prestigious positions in the newsroom, anchors are usually at the top of the heap. To make it into this esteemed job, news anchors typically start as broadcast reporters, getting experience presenting on camera and gaining the confidence and poise it takes to be the spokesperson for an entire news show. Presenting the news is one part of the job -- but there's also a lot going on behind the scenes.

A Typical Day

  • On a typical day, a news anchor will attend editorial meetings with his fellow reporters, editors, producers and the station news director, helping to develop story ideas and shape the direction of the day's show. Sometimes anchors are assigned stories to investigate -- much like reporters -- or they'll work on long-format special projects for upcoming events or investigations. As the show takes shape, the producer will typically provide a "rundown" of the show for the anchor team to review, followed by a full script that the anchors can rehearse. As the faces of the news station, anchors might also have additional duties such as making public appearances on behalf of the station or shooting show promos.

Job Requirements

  • Anchors typically have a degree in mass communications or journalism. Most pursue on-air or behind-the-scenes internships after graduation, and then work their way up from budding reporters at small-market stations to anchor positions. In addition to strong communication skills, anchors must be objective in their presentation of the news, poised in front of the camera, and able to quickly adapt to breaking news stories.
