Advice for Applying for Jobs Out of State
The Internet makes applying for out-of-state jobs almost as easy as applying for local jobs. Not only do the majority of companies accept electronic resume submissions, but more companies are beginning to put their applications online.
-
Use National Job Boards
-
Search for jobs in your target city using the large national job boards such as Monster, CareerBuilder, Indeed, and Hot Jobs. A job board is a website where companies post their open positions, usually for a fee.
Use Local Job Boards
-
Find job boards specific to your target city. Check the Craigslist job postings in the city you wish to live. Also, the Help Wanted job board (see Resources) allows you to search by city.
-
Be Clear About Your Relocation Expenses
-
Employers are often concerned about potential relocation expenses when considering out-of-state applicants. If you require assistance with your relocation expenses, indicate that on your cover letter. If you plan to cover your own expenses, state it very early on in your cover letter, in bold letters.
State Your Relocation Timeline
-
Indicate your relocation timeline in your cover letter. Companies are frequently reluctant to hire out-of-state applicants because they need someone in this position as soon as possible.
Use a Local Address
-
If you know where you will live upon relocation, use that address on your resume.
