Standard Vs. Ceramic Brake Pads

There are four common types of brake pads for automobiles; however, two of the more common are the standard brake pads and ceramic brake pads.

  1. Price

    • Typically, ceramic brake pads are more expensive than standard brake pads, because they are known as being "high performance" pads.

    Performance

    • Ceramic brake pads are generally clean and quiet with excellent braking characteristics.

    Vehicle Type

    • Ceramic pads are often used for sports performance cars or muscle cars, because they are typically high-speed vehicles operated by more aggressive drivers.

    Temperature

    • In comparison to standard brake pads, ceramic brake pads use copper fibers and ceramic compounds, allowing them to withstand high brake temperatures with less heat fade.

    Dust

    • Standard brake pads often produce more dust upon braking, while the ceramic pads produce dust that is less noticeable and less likely to stick to the tires.
