There are four common types of brake pads for automobiles; however, two of the more common are the standard brake pads and ceramic brake pads.

Price

Typically, ceramic brake pads are more expensive than standard brake pads, because they are known as being "high performance" pads.

Performance

Ceramic brake pads are generally clean and quiet with excellent braking characteristics.

Vehicle Type

Ceramic pads are often used for sports performance cars or muscle cars, because they are typically high-speed vehicles operated by more aggressive drivers.

Temperature

In comparison to standard brake pads, ceramic brake pads use copper fibers and ceramic compounds, allowing them to withstand high brake temperatures with less heat fade.

Dust

Standard brake pads often produce more dust upon braking, while the ceramic pads produce dust that is less noticeable and less likely to stick to the tires.
