What are the Causes of a Foot Burning Sensation?

The sensation of burning feet is a common problem. If the pain doesn't go away on its own, you may need a doctor to find the underlying cause and properly treat it.

  1. Mechanical Overload

    • Mechanical overload is when the feet ache and burn from too much stress placed on the foot. It is commonly caused by standing on your feet for long periods of time, vigorous running or being overweight.

    Athlete's Foot

    • Athlete's foot occurs when dermatophytes fungi grow on the feet. It's much easier for this fungus to grow when your feet are warm, wet and bunched together. Athlete's foot causes itching, stinging and burning on your foot.

    Diabetic Neuropathy

    • May people with diabetes develop diabetic neuropathy. This happens when the high blood sugar levels damage the nerves in your body; the feet and legs are the most common place where diabetic neuropathy occurs.

    Morton's Neuroma

    • Morton's neuroma occurs when tissue grows around a nerve in your foot, often between your third and fourth toes, and then causes a sharp, burning pain in the ball of your foot as it irritates the nerve.

    Footwear

    • Improper footwear is a common reason for burning feet. If your feet are flat-footed and you don't have any type of arch support in your shoes, it may cause burning feet. Also wear cotton socks instead of socks made out of synthetic fiber.
