The Job of a Casting Director

The Casting Society of America likens the role of casting director to that of a person in a company human resources department--one dedicated to actors. Casting directors must, says the Society, find and hire talent for theatre, film and TV productions.

  1. Employees

    • Casting directors aren't independent agents or contractors--they work for studio and production houses.

    Function

    • Casting directors audition performers for acting roles, narrowing down hopefuls to the best candidates, the final casting decision made by directors or producers.

    Representatives

    • Casting directors can be thought of as representatives of producers and directors. Their decisions about actors must not only take into account talent and experience, but the good of the production as a whole.

    Salaried

    • Casting directors don't earn fees or commissions from actors for casting them. They earn salaries from their employers, the studio or production houses.

    Pay

    • The average pay for casting directors in 2010, according to SimplyHired.com, is $69,000, but the site points out that actual salaries vary wildly.
