What Is the Difference Between a Patio & Porch?

People often enjoy spending time on their porches and patios. But it may be difficult to determine which one is which. How do we determine what constitutes a porch and a patio? Here is a list of facts to help you decide.

Construction

Patios are usually made of concrete, cement, stone, brick pavers or a combination of these products. Porches, on the other hand, are mostly constructed of wood and traditionally built with a roof to cover the area. Patios usually do not have any covering. Porches also have attached stairs leading to a walkway or path.

Location

Patios are located on the rear of the home and connected to the home by a patio door. Porches are located on the front of the house and can stretch the length of the house or be just wide enough to span the area of the front door.

Functions

Patios serve as an outdoor dining area and a gathering place for parties and barbecues. Porches protect from rain, provide an entry point for the home and also can serve as a place for conversations on a swing.

Elevation

Patios are ground level, while porches are elevated off the ground. The elevations of porches vary depending on the elevation of the house.

The word porch was derived from the Latin word "porta", which means "gate" or "entrance." Patio is the Spanish word for "backyard" or "back garden."
