Who Needs an F1 Visa?

Purpose

An F1 visa allows students who are not United States citizens to attend accredited educational institutions within the United States.
Requirements

Any student applying for an F1 visa must show proof of residence in their home country and have intent to return upon graduating. Such students must also have sufficient financial means of support and demonstrate a strong network of social roots in his home country, such as family, bank accounts and/or job offers.

Restrictions

In order to maintain F1 visa status, eligible students must take at least the minimum amount of credit hours required to maintain "full-time" student status at their institution of choice. F1 visas are applied for through each individual institution. Students cannot obtain an F1 visa, come to the United States and then choose a school.
Spouses and Children

Spouses and children of F1 visa holders may obtain F2 visas, which will allow them to temporarily reside with the F1 visa holder in the United States However, F2 visa holders are not allowed to seek employment.
After Graduation

As of January 2010, students who have attended school on an F1 visa may stay in the U.S. for a period not exceeding 60 days after they have finished school. A newly graduated F1 visa student may apply for a temporary work visa upon completion of studies.
