Medical offices are made up of several different staff members. From the second you walk in until the moment you leave, various medical office staff members will have worked with you to ensure your visit was both pleasant and professional.

Function

Medical office staff members preform an array of secretarial, clerical, clinical and customer-related duties in order to assist the office's physician and provide outstanding patient care.

Types

Although medical office staff varies from practice to practice, typical staff teams are made up of receptionists or secretaries, medical billers and coders, transcriptionists, medical assistants and office managers.

Duties

According to DegreeDirectory.com, common medical office duties include scheduling appointments, greeting patients, filling out and organizing paperwork, billing and coding, transcription, answering phones, verifying insurance, and maintaining office and medical supplies. Duties will ultimately be decided by the head physician of the office or the office manager.

Size

Depending on the size of the medical office, some staff members may find themselves performing extra duties, such as taking medical histories, performing lab tests or taking vital signs, in order to allow the physician to spend more time diagnosing and treating patients' conditions.

Considerations

Medical office staff members must be good with people. Customer service skills, proper phone etiquette and patience are essential qualities.
