Definition of a Hijacker File
A hijacker falls into the category of "malware" because it attempts to modify your Internet browser without your permission. While anti-virus and anti-spyware programs can detect and remove a hijacker, this type of malware is not strictly considered a virus or spyware.
-
Definition
-
A hijacker, or "browser hijacker," is a malicious piece of code that modifies the behavior and/or settings of your Internet browser.
Behavior
-
The affected Internet browser will display unusual behavior, such as redirecting your browser requests to other web pages, changing your default home or search page, preventing you from accessing certain websites, preventing you from leaving certain websites, adding bookmarks, or changing other browser settings without your knowledge or awareness. Hijackers can also generate pop-up windows, cause browser crashes, or create a slow or unresponsive computer.
-
Detection
-
A hijacker is initially detected by observing any or all of the symptoms described above. Detection of the specific hijacker is accomplished with an anti-virus or anti-spyware program.
Removal
-
A full computer scan using an anti-virus and an anti-spyware scanner will detect and remove most hijackers. It may be necessary to change your Internet browser settings back manually once the hijacker is removed.
Prevention
-
An anti-virus shield and an anti-spyware shield, both active and current with the latest updates, combined with common sense when accessing the Internet, can prevent the vast majority of malware infections.
