What Is Speech & Direct Manipulation?

Direct manipulation refers to interactive media which allows you to directly interact with the technology. Examples of direct manipulation include computer software and video games. Systems of direct manipulation that include speech interface allows for both physical and spoken interaction.

  1. Types

    • The types of direct manipulation include single modality interface, and multimodal systems. Single modality interface involves physical interaction, such as clicking a computer mouse.

    Multimodal System

    • Multimodal systems incorporate speech interface, which allows for voice-activated commands, in addition to physical interaction. An example of direct manipulation with speech interface, is using the voice command feature of your cell phone to call your friend.

    Benefits

    • Voice-activated commands leave your hands and eyes free. It makes multi-tasking easier. Multimodal systems also have fewer errors than single modality interface systems.

    Warning

    • Multimodal systems can cause you to slip into bad speaking habits. For example, if you wanted your wife to get you a soda you might say "Please get me a soda babe!" but multimodal systems could leave you used to speaking in direct commands, saying instead, "Get me a soda."

    Considerations

    • As of 2010 speech interface does not have the ability to undo an action or redo an action.
The Swedish Institute of Computer Science identifies establishing undo and redo actions as ways to advance speech interface.
