Wedding Toast Protocol

Prepare a wedding toast speech with care. Before sharing the intimate details and embarrassing adventures of the groom, consider the audience and the reputation of the couple in front of everyone they love on their wedding day.

  1. Make It Your First Drink

    • If you are delivering the toast, friends may suggest having a few drinks to lessen your nervousness; to prevent any embarrassing outbursts, make the champagne toast your first drink of the evening.

    K.I.S.S.

    • Keep It Simple, Stupid. Limit your speech time from three to five minutes, and practice your timing.

    Be Grateful

    • Offer thanks to the newlyweds, to the hosts, to their families and to all guests in attendance. Extra, sincere gratefulness cannot go awry.

    Advice

    • Share something positive you have learned from the newlyweds or a piece of advice you know will help them in their marriage.

    Stay PG and Above Belt

    • Only deliver positive humor that sheds a kind light on the groom or bride, and consider that grandparents and children may be listening.

    End with an Inspiration

    • Share a beautiful, inspiring quote or blessing, or cite the newlyweds as inspiration for love.
