Is Dimethicone Safe for Humans? thumbnail
Dimethicone is a common ingredient in cosmetic creams and lotions

Dimethicone is a silicone-based polymer and popular ingredient in skin-care and personal-care products. The US Food and Drug Administration has approved dimethicone as safe for this use.

  1. Main Ingredient

    • Dimethicone is the most common ingredient in many skin creams and lotions, shampoos and soaps. Many Aveeno moisturizing products contain dimethicone, as does Johnson's Baby Lotion.

    Application

    • Products containing dimethicone are applied externally in cream or lotion form, or used as a shampoo or soap.

    How It Works

    • Dimethicone forms a protective barrier on the skin to help retain moisture. Dimethicone's oil-like consistency also gives it emollient properties.

    Side Effects

    • Dimethicone may cause itching, stinging or burning of the skin in some people. More severe side effects such as hives, difficulty breathing and swelling are rare and caused by an allergic reaction.

    Warning

    • If you are using a prescription-strength dimethicone product and become pregnant or are considering becoming pregnant, speak to your doctor about the continued use of dimethicone.
