The Advantages of Water Lilies

A garden pond doesn't seem complete without the delicate beauty of a water lily or two. These plants have the advantages of better hardiness than other lilies, growing flexibility and consistent blooming. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Features

    • Water lilies, members of the lily family, grow from bulbs with long stems and flat wide leaves that act as "plates" for the star-shaped lily flowers. Water lilies are hardy to most temperatures and can grow in various depths of water.

    Growing Water Lilies

    • Water lily bulbs are planted in pots or shallow trays that can be set at the bottom of relatively shallow ponds. The lily's long stems allow the flowers and leaves to float on the water's surface, soaking up sun and heat.

    Blooming Schedule

    • Water lilies bloom in spring and can continue to rebloom throughout the summer with proper care.

    Theories/Speculation

    • Water lily blossoms open in the morning and close again in the afternoon, remaining closed throughout the night. Theoretically, this action is a natural process designed to take advantage of heat and light during the day and conserve them at night.

    Considerations

    • The opening and closing schedules of lilies make viewings difficult. Anyone who is away from home during the day will miss seeing their flowers. Lilies stay open for longer during the longest, hottest days of summer.
