Definition of a Converse Statement

Understanding the difference between conditional and converse statements and their signifiance in the fields of science is vital for making definitive determinations about a theory or issue you are working with.

Conditional Statement

Conditional statements are statements wherein one statement logically follows another. It is usually expressed in the terms "if blank is blank then blank is blank." For example, "if all dogs are black, my dachshund is black."

Converse Statement

A converse statement is the inversion of the terms in a conditional statement. For example, the converse statement of the above would be "if my dachshund is black, then all dogs are black." The logic and truth of the statement isn't guaranteed.

Scientific Uses

Converse statements are often used in sciences like chemistry and logic to test the truth of any given statement. Testing the exact opposite hypothesis can test the limit of any given hypothesis or statement.

Mathematical Uses

Converse statements are used in math and especially in algebra. Mathematics is a science that requires absolute precision and converse statements test problems and statements in order to solve the equation.

Term Confusion

An inverse statement is not the same as a converse statement. An inverse statement simply replaces any terms with the negative. For example, "if no dogs are black, then my dachshund is not black." This has a much different effect on an argument.
