Acupuncture Treatment Protocol for Tinnitus

Tinnitus is a condition that is not treated effectively by Western medicine. Acupuncture, on the other hand, has been shown to have some success in both curing and improving tinnitus.

  1. Tinnitus

    • Tinnitus is characterized by a ringing in the ears. The ringing varies in how it is perceived by the patient in terms of volume and pitch.

    Theory

    • According to Chinese medical theory, tinnitus can result from either an excess or a deficiency condition. The organ systems and meridians involved are generally either the liver and gallbladder or the kidneys.

    Excess Condition

    • Points will be used to reduce liver fire as well as to draw the qi or energy down and away from the ear such as Liver 2, Gallbladder 20 and Gallbladder 43. If there are signs of phlegm, points to reduce phlegm and dampness will be included such as Stomach 40 and Spleen 9.

    Deficiency Condition

    • The acupuncture points chosen will be focused on strengthening the kidneys such as Kidney 3, Kidney 23 and Ren 4. If there is insomnia, Kidney 7 and Spleen 6 may be added as well.

    Local and Distal Points

    • Gallbladder 2 and Triple Heater 17 and 21 are points that are located at the ear and are used for many types of ear problems. Triple Heater 5 and 6 are examples of distal points that are used to benefit the ear.
