Banquet Protocol
Proper dining protocol at a banquet or other formal meal is an important part of making a strong impression on your associates and peers, and may be used by new contacts to judge your social status. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Do Not Bring a Gift
-
On most occasions, it is inappropriate to bring a gift for your host.
The Silverware
-
In a multi-course meal, you will be provided with multiple sets of each utensil. As a general rule, the key to remembering what utensils go with which course is to start from the outside and work in toward the plate.
-
The 'Safe' Seats
-
If seats have not been assigned, it may be wise to sit in the safe seats: those two-thirds of the way down the table from the host.
Ladies on the Left
-
In general, when a couple attends a banquet, the lady will sit to the left and gentleman on the right.
Send a Thank You Note to the Host
-
After the banquet, mail a short note to the host thanking him for the invitation.
The Beginning
-
When the host unfolds his napkin, this is the indication that the meal has begun, and it is inappropriate to call on servers prior to this point.
