What Are the Benefits of Topically Applied Coq10?
The antioxidant CoQ10, given topically, may have anti-aging benefits such as minimizing the effects of free radicals, aiding in skin cell rejuvenation and counteracting the effects of stress that age skin. But the research is not conclusive.

Function
-
The cells in our bodies produce their own CoQ10. CoQ10 or Coenzyme Q10, is produced in the cells. Taken orally or topically, it acts as an antioxidant, protecting against aging free radicals and producing the energy cells need for maintenance and growth.
Cancer Application Studied
-
Topical CoQ10 shows potential for treating patients with breast and prostate cancer. In a presentation at an American Association of Cancer Research meeting, researchers from the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine showed a link between CoQ10 and the ability to kill breast and prostate cancer cells by applying it topically to the tumor site.

Why CoQ10 benefits skin
-
Infant skin contains high levels of CoQ10. As people age, their bodies produce lower levels of CoQ10. According to SmartSkinCare.com, supplying the skin with CoQ10 (whether topical or oral) could help the cells to produce elastin, collagen and other molecules that help maintain a youthful appearance.
Periodontitis
-
CoQ10 may improve periodontitis. A 1994 article on "Effect of Topical Application of Coenzyme Q10 on Adult Periodontitis," written by researchers at Osaka University in Japan, suggests that topically applied CoQ10, alone and in conjunction with more traditional forms of periodontal treatment, improves adult periodontitis--often called gum disease.
Considerations
-
The FDA does not regulate topical dietary supplement products as strictly as prescription topical treatments. SmartSkinCare.com cautions that results of studies on topical CoQ10 applications are preliminary. More research would be needed to prove beneficial effects.
