Cat Matted Hair Remover

Long-haired cats are frequently the victims of hair mats. These mats can be caused by a variety of issues and can be extremely painful to a cat unless removed. Removal can also be painful unless handled with care.

  1. Combing

    • Smaller mats can be gently removed by the use of a wide-tooth comb. Starting at the top, comb downward, without pulling, and gently tug the comb over the mat. This should untangle a few hairs. Repeat the process, tugging the comb through the mat a little deeper each time until the hair is completely untangled. This process should be used during regular combing as well.

    Mat Remover

    • Slightly larger mats can be loosened with a mat remover. This tool will allow you to cut through the mat so that a comb can be used to untangle it. Once again, work slowly and gently with the mat remover to avoid injuring the cat.

    Scissors

    • Truly snarled mats must be removed with scissors. Gently slide the comb underneath the mat and apply gentle pressure upward but do not pull. This will get the mat as far away from the skin as possible. Begin snipping away at the matted fur above the comb until the mat is free. Comb through any remaining fur.

    Clippers

    • For large matted areas or mats close to the skin, clippers should be used. Shaving a cat can be difficult as most don't like the sound or sensation; however, removing the mats is crucial to maintaining your pet's skin health. Hold the clippers at a 90-degree angle and slide the blade under the mat, paying close attention to keeping the blade parallel to the skin. Gently shave the mat away from the cat's skin. Continue shaving until all the mats are gone.

    Professional Removal

    • Cats that are extremely matted or do not tolerate home care should be seen by a professional. Schedule an appointment with a groomer or veterinarian to remove the mats.
