Salmon & Acne
While searching for home remedies to cure acne, you might find sources that suggest salmon as an acne cure. According to Leslie Baumann, author of "Cosmetic Dermatology," some of the nutritional components of salmon can support skin health and reduce acne.
-
Benefits
-
Salmon reduces acne because the omega-3 fatty acid in salmon has anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce breakouts. Omega-3 fatty acid also reduces water retention in skin.
Salmon Oil
-
In addition to eating salmon, salmon oil can be used topically to reduce scarring due to acne.
-
Risks
-
Although the omega-3 content of salmon is beneficial for acne, iodine in salmon may cause breakouts, especially in adolescents. If your acne worsens after eating salmon, choose a different method to reduce acne.
Other Sources
-
Other foods that contain omega-3 for acne include flaxseed, cod liver oil, fish oil, mackerel and albacore tuna.
Considerations
-
Because farmed salmon may contain toxins, choose wild salmon if possible. One toxin in farmed salmon, polychlorinated biphenyls, can cause acne breakouts and may have carcinogenic effects.
