Typing and navigation for cell phones have continued to evolve over the years to include full QWERTY keyboards and touch screens. Standard keyboards and touch screens each have advantages depending on a user's preference.

  1. Appearance

    • Touch screens offer a sleek, smooth design that looks more appealing to many cell phone users. Without any keys to break the continuity of a phone's shape, the design flows seamlessly.

    Size

    • Without any buttons, touch screen phones are able to allow for a larger viewing area on the screen, although this also makes them larger in overall size. Touch screens make text and photographs easier to see, and they enhance cell phone web browsing.

    Sensitivity

    • Touch screens can be too sensitive to the touch or too difficult to press, thus it is best to test a touch screen phone out prior to purchase. Also, if a touch screen is damaged, it is not possible to access other functions on the phone.

    Typing

    • Regular keyboards can be used by feel, whereas touch screens must be viewed in order to type the correct text. Learning to type on a touch screen also takes much longer than doing so on a regular keyboard.

    Cost

    • While phone costs vary depending on the provider and manufacturer, most touch screen phones are more expensive than their regular keyboard counterparts because of the technology involved to create them.
