Each hair grows from a single follicle that features a complex root structure beneath the skin.

Hair production is a very complex process. Each hair grows from a single follicle embedded in the scalp. Hair in the follicle that lies beneath the skin makes up the hair root; hair above the skin is the shaft we see.

  1. Hair Bulb

    • The hair bulb lies underneath the scalp at the very bottom of the hair root. The hair bulb is where the hair receives its nutrients from the scalp's blood supply. It is also where new cells are continuously generated.

    Dermal Papilla

    • The dermal papilla lies just below the hair bulb in the follicle and provides the hair bulb with access to the scalp's blood supply.

    Sebaceous Gland

    • The sebaceous gland is anchored to the hair follicle and produces sebum to lubricate the strand as it emerges.

    Arrector pili

    • The arrector pili is a small muscle that is attached to the follicle. When it is stimulated, either by fear or cold temperatures, it contracts and the hair "stands" on end.

    Hair Shaft

    • The hair shaft we see is the result of cells from the hair root being slowly compressed, hardened and pushed up and through the skin.
