Golf Club Repair Information

Golf club repair refers to any alternation of the club, from fixing a component to adjusting the playing characteristics by bending the club head or adding weight.

  1. Types

    • The most common type of club repair is changing worn grips. Other types include replacing broken shafts, changing the lie angle, changing the loft, shortening or lengthening the club and changing the swing weight.

    Effects

    • Some repairs effect the playability of the club. Lengthening the club, for example, will make the shaft more flexible, whereas shortening the club will stiffen the shaft.

    Considerations

    • Repairing the club may not make financial sense. The cost to replace a broken shaft, for example, could be more than the club is worth. In contrast, replacing the grips on a regular basis can extend the life of a set of clubs, saving money.

    History

    • A key function of golf professionals in the 19th century was club making and repair. Today, golf pros tend to stick to simple club repair, such as changing grips and trimming shafts.

    Non-Repairable

    • Not all damaged clubs are salvageable. Even the most talented club repair specialist cannot fix a broken or cracked club head or hosel (neck of the club head).
