Post Stroke Recovery

Stroke patients have a stronger and more complete recovery when they follow a stroke rehabilitation program that is prescribed by medical professionals. Post stroke recovery patients should start rehabilitation as soon as possible after a stroke.

  1. Rehabilitation

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, the main goal of stroke rehabilitation is to help a patient relearn basic skills that were lost due to stroke damage to the brain.

    Communication

    • Communication skills such as speaking, writing and listening may be lost or impaired after a stroke and may require the assistance of language or speech pathologists.

    Motor Skills

    • Muscle strength and coordination may be reduced by a stroke and these skills may be improved with the help of physicians, physical therapists and rehabilitation nurses.

    Mobility and Range of Motion

    • Walking aids such as walkers, canes or braces may be needed during therapy until walking and balancing are relearned with physical therapy. Exercises may be prescribed to increase a patient's range of motion and reduce muscle tension.

    Psychological Therapy

    • Counseling and anti-depressant drug therapy may be required in stroke patients who have suffered psychological effects.

    Other Therapy

    • Forced use therapy may be used to restrict the use of an undamaged limb and practice using a limb that was affected by a stroke. Electrical stimulation may be used to strengthen muscles that were affected by a stroke.
