Quilting is needed to finish either a pieced, appliqued or wholecloth quilt and serves the purpose of holding the layers together. Two methods can be used for quilting: hand quilting or machine quilting.

  1. What is Hand Quilting?

    • Hand quilting is made up of a series of running stitches. Consistency of stitch length and penetration of the three layers are the hallmarks of a good quilter.

    Tools for Hand Quilting

    • Hand quilting requires very little in the way of tools: between or quilting needles, quilting thread, a thimble, and a quilting frame or hoop.

    What is Machine Quilting?

    • Machine quilting utilizes a sewing machine to make the running stitch that makes up quilting. Stitch length is often determined by the skill of the operator although some more advanced machines have a stitch regulator which ensures an even stitch length.

    Tools for Machine Quilting

    • The primary tool needed for machine quilting is a good quality sewing machine. You must be able to drop the feed teeth on the machine to allow for free movement of the quilt while stitching.

    Industrial Quilting Machines

    • Serious professional machine quilters often opt to purchase an industrial quilting machine. However, these require a lot of room and are very expensive to acquire.

    Machine Versus Hand Quilting

    • Machine quilting is a faster method to accomplish the same thing as hand quilting. Both methods require skill and proper preparation for good results. The most telling difference is in the look of the stitch. Machine quilting will give a more solid and uniform look to the stitching whereas hand work is often preferred for a traditional look.
