The acronym "CBD" stands for Central Business District. In Australia, New Zealand as well as parts of Asia and Africa, the acronym appears regularly in popular usage and conversation. The American equivalent of CBD is the term "downtown" or "center city."

  1. Location

    • Most of the major roads of a city will lead to the CBD. It is the heart of the city, though not necessarily the center-most location.

    Buildings

    • The CBD contains the tallest buildings of city as well as the highest concentration of buildings. This is where you will generally find retail stores, museums, restaurants and the most expensive housing.

    Transportation

    • A city's public transportation focuses on the CBD. Traffic in the CBD is often congested.

    People

    • Tourists as well as local residents and businessmen keep the CBD bustling with activity.

    Culture

    • The CBD is usually the oldest part of the city, though the value of the real estate means that there is a mix of old and new buildings. The CBD is the place where the city's culture is most evident.
