Discolored, misshapen and sometimes odorous toenails are the telltale signs of toenail fungus. While this condition can be embarrassing, it can also be painful and dangerous since untreated fungus can cause a toenail to become brittle and even to fall off after some time. There are a few remedies available, however, that can rid a toe of fungus using the power of natural oils. The healthful qualities of olive oil in particular can help remedy toenail fungus symptoms.

How it Works

Regular application of olive oil will soften nails and cuticles. This can help prevent dryness and cracking of fungus-ridden nails, but won't necessarily cure toe fungus unless the olive oil is mixed with one of a few other natural oils. Even without these other oils, however, olive oil goes a long way toward restoring healthy toenails.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has long been a standard product in natural remedies. The anti-fungal properties of tea tree oil, when mixed with equal parts olive oil, can help eliminate toe fungus in just a few weeks. After applying both, sponge with hot water to remove the oils and then apply an alcohol-based mouthwash. The antiseptic properties of the mouthwash will work on the toe problem as well. Daily application of this powerful mixture can completely cure toenail fungus within three weeks.

Oregano Oil

Mix two drops of oregano essential oil with a teaspoon of olive oil and apply this mixture once a day for two weeks to the fungus. Oregano essential oil has antiseptic and antibacterial properties that can greatly aid in eliminating discoloration, brittleness, and embarrassment that accompany toenail fungus.

Other Uses for Olive Oil

Olive oil can help regulate cholesterol levels if consumed on a regular basis, and it acts as an effective moisturizer when applied directly to the skin. It's also used as a shampoo additive, lip balm and to treat some skin disorders.
