What Is Aviation Engineering?

Aviation engineering is the use of science and mathematics for all kinds of purposes in the area of flight, such as through engineering and maintaining planes. It is a broad career path with many jobs and opportunities.

  1. The Government

    • The government plays a large role in the hiring of aviation engineers for all sorts of reasons. Federal, state and local agencies all commonly employ aviation engineers for agencies such as the Department of Transportation.

    FAA

    • The Federal Aviation Administration is in charge of controlling aircraft navigation throughout the whole nation, maintaining navigation, licensing and certification. Aviation engineers are often involved, and need to be thoroughly acquainted with the FAA.

    Specialties

    • The FAA further employs many aviation engineers to work on research and development problems, noise pollution and hypersonic aircraft among other things. Aviation engineers are heavily involved with furthering aviation technology.

    Design

    • Aviation engineers do more than work on planes. Aviation engineers also play a large role in airport design. They provide guidance for the construction and daily running of the airports, as well as help in the operation and maintenance.

    On the Job

    • Once obtaining a Bachelors of Science in engineering, aviation engineers commonly work at a desk in a laboratory in between conducting observations. They also test equipment and typically work a 40 hour week.
