What Is a Certified Payroll Specialist?
A certified payroll specialist (CPS) is an individual who has passed an exam administered by the National Association of Certified Public Bookkeepers (NACPB). The certification warrants the person has the knowledge necessary to effectively fill the role of payroll professional.

Eligibility

To receive certification, you must pass the CPS exam and have one year of related work experience.
Testing

The NACPB provides a self-study guide and access to the CPS test online. You have 24 hours to answer 80 questions. This is an open-book exam.

Recertification

Recertification is required annually. The recertification requirements include submitting proof that you have completed 16 hours of continuing professional education annually and maintain membership with the NACPB.
Cost

This is a free certification, but you are required to maintain membership in the NACPB. Membership costs as of January 2010 are $99 for a Paraprofessional membership and $199 for a Professional membership.
