Millions of people suffer from hair loss. Benzoyl peroxide is a commonly used topical acne treatment. Acne can occur on the scalp, so you may be concerned whether to use benzoyl peroxide to treat it.

Formulation

A popular over-the-counter remedy, benzoyl peroxide is available in 5 percent and 10 percent strengths. You can opt for cream or gel preparations. Benzoyl peroxide is often mixed with other acne medications, such as clindamycin.

Scalp Acne

Hair follicles can become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, forming pimples. Many times these resolve themselves, but sometimes they need treatment.

Bleaching Effect

Benzoyl peroxide, like other peroxide solutions, tends to bleach hair. This bleaching effect means benzoyl peroxide is not the best choice for treating scalp acne.

Hair Loss

According to Dr. William Rassman of the New Hair Institute, on his BaldingBlog.com site, benzoyl peroxide does not cause hair loss.

Hair Growth

Other than causing irritation, benzoyl peroxide does not seem to stimulate hair follicles. It does not stop hair loss or promote hair growth.
