What Are Advantages or Disadvantages of Using Metric System?

The metric system uses a base 10 system for all units of measure. The metric system was first adopted in France in 1795.

  1. Ease of Conversion

    • The metric system uses a series of prefixes for all units that represent a change of a factor of 10. For example, "kilo" signifies 1,000, so one kilogram equals 1,000 grams. The metric system does not require you to memorize different conversion factors, such as 4 quarts to a gallon or 12 inches to a foot.

    Worldwide Acceptance

    • Nearly every country in the world, with the United States being one exception, has adopted the metric system over traditional measuring.

    Simplicity

    • The metric system uses only one base unit for each type of measurement. For example, when measuring weight, the base unit is the gram, and prefixes such as milli- and kilo- are used to adjust for scale. In the standard system, weight can be measured in ounces, pounds or tons.

    Convenient Measures

    • The Math Forum says a disadvantage of the metric system is that the system cannot create flexible measurements that are convenient. For example, instead of being able to order a pound of meat, you would order 454 g.

    Costs of Implementation

    • Officially implementing the metric system in everyday life would be a disadvantage in the United States because of the cost to change measurements on everything from car speedometers and speed limit signs to gas pumps and scales.

Regarding the Ehow-of-the-Day for 1-09-10 on Disadvantages of the Metric System, as least as far as i got into it, there were 2 omissions: 1/ The 'Standard' (AKA English Customary) System is based on the best, most convenient if variable stardard around--the human body. What did that 7th-grade science-room poster say? The inch is the distance from thumb-tip to first knuckle..the cubit is elbow to tip of middle finger..the foot is obvious..and the yard is the tip of the king's nose to the tip of his outstretched arm..etc. At that time ('61-2), plumb in the midst of the cold war, when "America" decided that youngsters should be primed for careers in science, even if the active ingredient in the Teen Bomb turned out to be Tang--thereby making a killing of a different sort--the Standard system of mensuration was being derided as practically superstitious. 2/ the Metric System was perhap...
