Artificial vs. Organic Food

The most notable differences between artificial and organic foods are content, nutritional value and how they affect the body. Organic foods tend to be more expensive, but eating them may help save money on medical bills.

  1. Manufacturing

    • Certified organic foods are mandated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to be grown without chemical pesticides, herbicides, hormones, antibiotics, or other artificial substances. Artificial foods have no such guidelines, and many contain chemicals and additives to enhance the flavor and visual appeal of the food.

    Content

    • Artificial foods are extensively processed and refined, and they are not derived from natural or whole foods. Organic foods can be processed, but they come from naturally produced, whole foods.

    Nutrition

    • Organic foods are almost always more nutritious than artificial foods because the refining and manufacturing of artificial foods often strips them of nutrients.

    Effect on the Body

    • Artificial foods may give the body a boost of energy, but it will quickly fade. Over time, eating a lot of artificial foods and neglecting to exercise can result in weight gain. People who choose organic foods may have healthier bodies if they exercise regularly and eat whole foods.

    Cost

    • Organic foods often are more expensive because they cost more to grow, harvest and manufacture.
