What Is CoQ10 Derived From?

CoQ10 is a substance made in the body that helps to create energy used by the body's cells. CoQ10 decreases with age and illness and is being tested to determine whether it is effective as a supplement.

  1. Identification

    • CoQ10 is a precursor made within each cell of the body. CoQ10 must be present for the production of fuel for each cell.

    Considerations

    • CoQ10 levels decrease with age according to a study by the University of Washington. People with diseases such as HIV/AIDS, diabetes and heart conditions also have low levels of CoQ10.

    Properties

    • Research, also according to the University of Washington, shows that CoQ10 has antioxidant properties in the body, meaning it may destroy cancer-causing free radicals and reduce inflammation. This has led to CoQ10 being sold as a supplement for endurance training or weight lifting.

    Potential

    • CoQ10 is being touted for every disease from Alzheimer's to every form of cancer. But it is still not known what benefits can be gained by taking supplements of CoQ10. It also is not known to be toxic, nor a wonder drug for healthy people who eat a balanced diet.

    Cancer fighter

    • CoQ10 is being studied in both the treatment of cancer and the treatment of cancer drug side effects. According to Cancer.gov, CoQ10 can safeguard the heart against damaging effects of doxorubicin, a cancer drug. The enzyme is also being studied for its immune-boosting properties, which can help fight cancer.
