What Is TV Violence?

TV violence is a controversial topic in contemporary culture, raising questions of moral desensitization. It does not refer to violent acts committed with actual television sets, but only to the images broadcast that appear violent on the screen.

  1. Types of Violence

    • From showing images of war on the news to cop shows that are constantly showing guns being fired to kids cartoons that feature ninjas or characters consistently fighting enemies, violence on TV is prevalent.

    Children

    • Watching violence on TV can be detrimental to children, according to ridgenet.org, since they are impressionable and likely to mimic the actions they see without filtering the actions through a moral understanding of the violence.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Since violence is something that will always be on TV due to American rights of expression, it is wholly the parents' responsibility to ensure their kids do not see violent images.

    Considerations

    • If a child does see violence on TV, explain to them that it is fake but could represent something that could actually happen in real life.

    Benefits

    • A positive aspect of TV violence (for adults) could be a psychological way of living vicariously through the images so they are not committed in real life.
