According to Terence M. Davidson, M.D., F.A.C.S., a professor from the University of California, a nose disease is a condition or a disorder that affects your nose and may also affect your breathing, sense of smell and sense of taste.

  1. Types

    • Common types of nose conditions are the common cold, a broken nose, frostbite, postnasal drip and nose polyps. Other less common conditions include polychondritis (inflammation of nose cartilage) and deviated septum (abnormal nasal air passage).

    Causes

    • The common cold is caused by viruses. Sinus infections are caused when mucous becomes infected with bacteria. Environmental factors, such as seasonal pollens, dust and pet dander, can cause nasal congestion, runny nose and inflammation of the nose lining.

    Signs and Symptoms

    • Visible signs include lumps, nose deformities and bruises. Excessive and uncontrollable nose-bleeding and pain are both symptoms of serious nose diseases. A runny nose and the discomfort that comes with swollen mucous membranes are signs that commonly accompany minor conditions.

    Treatment

    • Minor nasal conditions can sometimes be treated with simple remedies, such as irrigating the nose with water or antibiotic solutions, antibiotic ointments and nasal sprays. Surgery is usually needed to treat severe sinus disease, nose polyps and deviated septum.

    Prevention

    • Many nose diseases have environmental causes. Preventative measures include regular cleaning, dusting, using air purifiers and eliminating tobacco smoking in the house.
