Pillbugs, which also can be called woodlice, are creepy little things that most of homeowners have been acquainted with at some point or another. These little guys love to find areas that are dusty and damp, which means they often find their way into our homes. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Definition

    • Pill bugs are a member of the Crustacean family, which lobsters, crab and shrimp belong to as well. Their scientific name is terrestrial Isopods. They can be identified by the dark, round shape that many pill bugs fold themselves into when disturbed.

    Dangers of pill bugs

    • Other than being a bit creepy to look at, pill bugs pose no real danger to people. They do not promote any sort of bacterial disease.

    Chemical-free control methods

    • Since pill bugs are attracted to excess dust and moisture inside the home, the best defense is to remove the source of that moisture and dust. If you choose to use chemical treatments to rid your home of pill bugs, removing excess moisture first will make these chemicals more effective.

    Pill bug geography

    • While pill bug populations can be found throughout the northern and central United States, they particularly favor wet, humid locations including coastal habitats and Florida wetlands.

    Interesting facts

    • Although they are Crustaceans, pill bugs are the only member of that family that can spend their entire lives on dry land.
