Different Window Covering Ideas
Window coverings serve three basic purposes--they provide privacy, control the light and add style to the room. While many people only think of curtains and blinds when they consider window coverings, there are many other ways to dress up and cover a window. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Venetian Blinds
-
Venetian blinds are thought to have originated in Persia, where they were discovered by Venetian traders. Other types of wooden window blinds had been in use since at least the time of the Egyptians. In 1946, Hunter Douglas introduced Venetian blinds with aluminum slats. Mini-blinds made of vinyl or enamel-coated aluminum became popular in the 1980s and remain popular.
Vertical Blinds
-
Vertical blinds are fabric covered slats that hang vertically from a top header. The slats can be adjusted from side to side to allow light to enter or to darken the room. Vertical blinds are often used for wide and tall windows or to cover sliding glass doors.

Wooden Shutters
-
Wooden shutters were originally developed to close over windows from the outside to protect the glass from weather and debris. Decorative interior shutters are a popular choice for rustic and country style rooms.
Roller Shades
-
Roller shades are made of vinyl or fabric. The material is mounted on a spring roller that is hung at the top of the window. The shades can be pulled down to cover the window or rolled around the roller out of the way to let the light in.
Fabric Shades
-
Balloon shades and Roman shades are made of fabric that can be drawn up or folded up and tied off with fabric ties. They are popular window covering choices for more formal rooms.
