The adrenals are found on the top of the kidneys.

The adrenals are hormone-producing glands that are found on top of the kidneys. Adrenal problems can cause both widespread and devastating conditions in the body. A number of disparate factors can lead to adrenal problems.

  1. Adrenal Conditions

    • Urologyhealth.org reports that conditions which are directly linked to adrenal problems include Cushing's disease, adrenal tumors, pituitary tumors and hyperaldosteronism. The National Institute of Health also mentions Addison's disease as an adrenal problem.

    Hormone Imbalance

    • As a part of the endocrine system, the adrenals both produce and are controlled by hormones. When the adrenals are not functioning properly they can produce an excess or insufficient amount of key hormones including cortisol, adrenaline and aldosterone (a sex hormone).

    Physical Effects

    • The physical effects of an adrenal disorder vary considerably among conditions but may include weight gain, diabetes, hypertension, fatigue, nausea and chest pains, according to urologyheath.org.

    Treatment

    • Adrenal problems caused by tumors are typically dealt with through surgical removal of the tumor, reports endocrineweb.com. Instances of an underproduction of adrenal hormones or removal of a hormone-producing gland may require hormone supplementation.

    Outlook

    • If properly diagnosed, most adrenal problems can be successfully treated or controlled through surgical intervention, medication, or chemotherapy in the case of cancer.
