Can You Recycle File Folders?

File folders can be recycled.

Large companies, small companies and home offices are reevaluating business practices as going green becomes more and more popular. For a total green makeover, some businesses are examining each office supply for its individual recyclable capabilities.

Reuse First

Before you chuck your file folder into the recycling bin, you can turn it inside out to reuse it. Sometimes file folders in good condition can be reused several times before being recycled simply by adding a new label to the folder.

Manila Folders

Manila folders are an office staple item. These used folders can be recycled as easily as cardboard and paper.

Hanging File Folders

File folders that hang also count as paper in the recycling world. Most recycling facilities do not even require that businesses or homes sort their recycling by material or color, which makes recycling even more appealing.

Recycle Ready

Before you recycle your file folder, make sure everything inside it can be recycled as well. Sticky notes and paper are fine to go in the recycling bin, but if your folder has photographs, disks, transparencies or plastic attached, remove these items before recycling the file folder.

Food Soiled Folders

In an office environment, sometimes coffee or food can contaminate a file folder. While this item cannot be recycled after being soiled from food, it can still be composted.
