Squirrel Metabolic Bone Disease

Squirrel metabolic bone disease (MBD) is a condition seen in animals that have been captured or are under human care for rehabilitation. Although it is sometimes seen in wild squirrels, it is quite rare in that population.

  1. Significance

    • Squirrels with MBD often have an inadequate diet. Certain vitamins such as vitamin D are essential to a squirrel and squirrels in captivity often do not get the proper nutrients.

    Time Frame

    • Squirrels can begin to show signs of MBD in as little as 5 days if they are not getting the proper food.

    Early Signs

    • The first signs of MBD are lethargy and lots of sleeping. The squirrel will be in pain, so it won't want to move much as bone and muscle atrophy.

    Treatment

    • The addition of more calcium and vitamin D can help treat the squirrel. Vitamin D can be acquired via exposure to artificial sunlight.

    Genetics

    • In some rare cases, metabolic bone disease is inherited genetically and has nothing to do with diet.

    Vet Help

    • If the symptoms grow worse even after treatment, check with your veterinarian on the proper course of action.
