-
Function

Conventional beds consist of a frame that holds a box spring and a mattress. Platform beds consist of a frame and base combined that support a mattress.
Materials
-
Platform and conventional beds are readily available in wood, metal and upholstery.
-
Benefits
-
Because platform beds do not require the use of a box spring, this may be a more cost effective option for you. However, if you already own a mattress and box spring set, you will need a conventional bed for them.
Sizes
-
Both platform and conventional beds support traditional mattress sizes: twin, full, queen and king.
Features
-
Platform beds often feature drawers or cabinets underneath the mattress, accessible around the perimeter of the bed. Conventional beds offer a small space to slide items underneath the bed, but most of area underneath the mattress is taken up by the box spring.
Tip
-
If you choose a conventional bed, purchase a bed skirt or a bedspread to cover the box spring. Decorative frames are also available where the box spring is covered by side rails and a foot rail or board.
