Safety Eyewear For Welding
Eye protection for welders consists of specialized safety glasses, goggles, welding helmets and face shields. Welding produces very intense light, sparks and spatter that can injure your eyes.
-
Safety Goggles
-
Goggles should have vents to reduce fogging. The straps should fit snugly. Chemical goggles provide the best protection if the environment has dust, fumes or vapors.
Safety Glasses
-
Safety glasses must fit well and have side shields to protect against flash burns. Adjust the temples to center the lens in front of the eye. Replace glasses with cracked, pitted or excessively-scratched lenses.
-
Secondary Protection
-
Welding helmets and face shields represent secondary eye protection. You must wear them with goggles or safety glasses that have side shields.
Filtered Plates
-
Filtered plates on protective eyewear block light that can burn the eyes and cause blindness. You must select the correct filter shade for the type of welding involved. Filter plates with higher numbers mean darker plates. Use a shade selector chart from the American Welding Society to help you choose correctly.
Prescription Eye Protection
-
If you wear prescription eyewear, you can use prescription safety glasses or goggles over your regular glasses. If they have any metal jewelry, do not wear it if working around high-voltage electricity. You should also avoid wearing contact lenses in the presence of dust or irritating chemicals.
