Finding a job with a criminal record potentially can be a challenging task. A former criminal offender has a better chance of finding gainful employment by narrowing the scope of jobs she seeks. There are certain jobs that a person with a criminal record has solid chance of obtaining.
The type of crime plays a significant role in prospective job limitations faced by a person with a criminal record. For example, a person convicted of a violent crime faces far more limited options than does an individual with a minor, non-violent offense.
A person with a criminal record typically can find employment in the construction and related trades as well as in the hospitality industry. Employment requirements are less stringent in these arenas.
Although there are certain government positions a former offender cannot obtain, certain local, state and federal governmental units do sponsor reintegration employment programs for individuals with a criminal record.
A variety of not-for-profit agencies (community centers, certain human services agencies, churches and religious organizations) generally are more amenable to hiring men and women with criminal records.
A common misconception is that a criminal record forever dogs an offender. In fact, after a person with such a history gains her first position of employment and succeeds at it, future positions of employment become far easier to obtain.
