What Is a Wedge Haircut? thumbnail
A wedge-cutting technique is used to create an inverted bob.

The wedge haircut has been around for decades, but it has changed considerably throughout the years. Today, numerous styles use wedge-cutting techniques. Basically, a wedge cut is any cut that uses a weight line, elevation or tapers to create a full-bodied look. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Names

    • There are several cuts that use wedge techniques, including stacked bobs, inverted bobs, mushroom cuts and tapered cuts. Perhaps the most famous wedge cut was worn by world-famous figure skater Dorothy Hamill.

    The Cut

    • Wedge cuts are created using elevated cutting techniques. The hair is held away from the head at a 20- to 45-degree angle during the cut to create a stacked or wedged look.

    Variations

    • The wedge has many variations. In most styles, the wedge is used in the back of the head to create fullness in the crown. Wedges can also be used on the sides of the head as demonstrated by mushroom or bowl cuts. The wedge can be placed high on the head or several inches below the hairline.

    Style

    • Wedge haircuts are usually styled in a straight, free-flowing manner.

    Look

    • The look of the wedge is simple and classic. Popular women's and men's cuts take advantage of wedge techniques to create body and interest.
