What Is Cardiac Sonographer?
A cardiac sonographer, also known as an echocardiographer, is an ultrasound technologist who images the heart and vascular system. They are proficient in cardiac anatomy and diseases and understand the principles of ultrasound.

Echocardiography is the study of the cardiovascular system. Imaging of the heart can detect structural abnormalities, valve defects and blood flow issues.
Cardiac Sonographer

The echocardiographer uses ultrasound equipment to perform cardiac exams per a doctor's request. The sonographer may work in hospital or an out-patient office setting.

Education

Requirements vary on education, but most programs are a two-year associate degree path with hands-on clinical experience. After the program is completed some states require a license or optional certification through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

As with most jobs in allied health, there is great opportunity and job security. The field is expected to add jobs quicker than the rest of the economy over the long term.

In 2006, the median salary for an echocardiographer was $57,160. The salary varies based on location and type of setting or specialty the sonographer pursues.
