Wool Wash & Lanolin

Maintaining the softness and structure of wool items takes a little extra care than typical machine-washing and drying. If you have wool items, keep them looking new with wool wash and lanolin. They are most often used to clean and preserve wool diaper covers, but these items can be useful in caring for any wool garments. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Wool Wash

    • Wool wash is a product that is specially formulated to clean wool products. Several companies make it, and you can buy it online or in yarn stores locally.

    Lanolin

    • Lanolin is a creamy, oily substance that comes in tubes or solids. You can buy it in the baby section of mass retail stores. The purpose of lanolin is to soften wool products.

    Using Wool Wash

    • Use wool wash to hand-wash your wool garments. Put a tablespoon of wool wash into a sink full of warm water. Gently massage the wool garment into the wash.

    Using Lanolin

    • To use lanolin, mix a pea-sized amount of it in a small container of hot water. Shake or stir the mixture until all of the lanolin dissolves, then pour it into your sink full of wool wash. Swish your wool garment around; let it soak for fifteen minutes.

    Felting Risk

    • Wool garments will felt; this means that the fibers will mesh together if they are exposed to water that is too hot--or if you agitate them too much in warm or hot water. This is why you must gently massage your wool garments while washing. Be certain to avoid machine-washing as well.
