Hair Loss in Collies

Hair loss, or alopecia, is usually a sign of an underlying disease or condition in dogs. While hair loss can affect any breed of dog, collies are more susceptible to certain diseases that can cause the condition.

Cause

One cause of hair loss in collies is known as black hair follicular dysplasia. This inherited condition is typically found in dogs with coats of two or three colors.

Function

Dogs with black hair follicular dysplasia begin to lose hair on the darkest spots of the fur. This condition strikes puppies and progresses until the dark sections are completely bald. There is no cure or treatment for this condition.

Sun

Another cause for hair loss in collies is known as solar dermatitis, which is the equivalent of a sunburn.

Collie Nose

Solar dermatitis is also known as "collie nose." Since collies have no pigmentation on their nose, they are prone to this condition, which is characterized by hair loss and scaling there.

Infection

Skin infections such as mange and ringworm, which are common to all breeds of dog, can also cause hair loss in collies.
