Window Shutter Styles

Shutters are window coverings that add style to a home both on the interior and exterior. Shutters consist of a top and bottom, and the in-between pieces are referred to as louvers. They can be opened or shut and raised or lowered by a stile located on the side. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Plantation Shutters

    • Plantation shutters are built with movable louvers. The louvers are usually anywhere between 2 1/2 inches to 4 1/2 inches wide. They the give a home a more contemporary look than traditional shutters. They are extremely concealing when shut, and offer complete privacy.

    Traditional Shutters

    • Traditional shutters are also referred to as colonial shutters. This type of shutters originated in the Northeastern section of the United States. Traditional shutters have louvers that are 1 1/4 inch wide. They offer privacy when shut, but not as much as plantation shutters.

    Vinyl Shutters

    • Vinyl shutters are only used on the exterior of a house. They are not raised or lowered with a stile; they are opened and shut by hand. They are very durable and economic, and can protect from intense sunlight.

    Shutter Blinds

    • Shutter blinds are also referred to as window blinds. They have been popular in the United States since the 1980s. Blinds use horizontal louvers that are often made out of aluminum or wood to control the amount of sunlight they let into a room.

    Hurricane Shutters

    • Hurricane shutters are meant to protect homes from the damage caused by hurricanes. These shutters are installed over windows during the months of hurricane season. They are metal and are not meant to be opened.
