Inflammatory Cancer in Dogs

Inflammatory Cancer in Dogs thumbnail
Spaying a female dog early reduces the risk of developing mammary cancer.

In dogs, inflammatory cancer refers to an extremely malignant form of mammary cancer. Mammary cancer is common in female dogs but extremely rare in male dogs. Fortunately, spaying a female dog prior to the age of two can greatly reduce the risk of developing any form of mammary cancer.

  1. Causes

    • Inflammatory mammary cancer is a type of reproductive cancer and therefore, mutations that occur in hormone levels or reproductive cells have been known to cause cancer.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of inflammatory mammary carcinoma include redness, swelling, pain or discomfort and a hard or soft mass that can be felt or seen beneath the skin. The affected area may also be warm to the touch.

    Diagnosis

    • A biopsy is required to determine what type of mammary cancer is present. Various blood tests and an urinalysis are performed to determine the functioning levels of other organs. This aids in learning whether metastasis (spreading of the cancer) has occurred.

    Treatment

    • Inflammatory cancer is highly malignant and often has spread at the time of diagnosis. Therefore, aggressive treatment--involving surgical removal along with chemotherapy or radiation therapy--is usually recommended.

    Prognosis

    • Unfortunately, due to the high rate of metastasis and malignancy, dogs diagnosed with inflammatory carcinoma often have a poor prognosis.
